“Achilles and Penthesilea” In my art history class my professor showed us this pot with a painting of Achilles and Penthesilea (the second picture) with Achilles in the act of killing her. The myth goes that Achilles went after the Amazonian warrior queen Penthesilea and killed her and just as his spear went into her chest their eyes met and they fell deeply in love, but they knew that their love was futile because…Achilles had just stabbed Penthesilea and she was dying. I thought that the story was really tragic and beautiful and I wanted to redo the pottery painting in my own style (borrowing from the Greek style of design) and giving them actual emotion in their eyes so you actually believed they were falling in love and also feeling great sorrow because they couldn’t be together.
